Launch of Shandong’s First International Top Scientist Studio Held at Qilu University of Technology (Shandong Academy of Sciences)

On March 16, the launching ceremony of the Klaus Attosecond Laser Studio — Shandong’s first International Top Scientist Studio — was held at Qilu University of Technology (Shandong Academy of Sciences).Professor Ferenc Krausz, winner of the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physics, attended the event together with leading officials and experts including Sun Haisheng, Secretary of the Party Leadership Group and Director of the Department of Science and Technology of Shandong Province; Gong Wendong, Vice Minister of the Organization Department of the Provincial Party Committee; Huang Bo, Director of Jinan Municipal Bureau of Science and Technology; Yang Futao, Executive Deputy Director of the Administrative Committee of Jinan High-tech Zone; and Wu Yantao, Secretary of the Party Committee of Qilu University of Technology (Shandong Academy of Sciences).Su Xuefeng, Vice Director of the Provincial Department of Science and Technology and Director of the Provincial Bureau of Foreign Experts Affairs, presided over the ceremony.

Sun Haisheng extended a warm welcome to Professor Krausz and his team. He pointed out that Shandong has grown into an influential hub for scientific and technological innovation in the laser sector and a core base for the laser industry in northern China. The province is now vigorously building the “Qilu Optics Valley” to forge the “Third Pole of China’s Laser Industry.”He expressed hope that Professor Krausz’s team and Qilu University of Technology (Shandong Academy of Sciences) would join forces to develop the studio into a globally influential innovation highland in the laser field, explore cutting-edge “unmanned areas” of technology, integrate industry, academia and research, and foster a sound environment for talent, so as to become a leader in laser technology research, a doer in achievement transformation, and a talent pool for high-end professionals.

Wu Yantao stated that the University would take the launch of the studio as an opportunity to further deepen international cooperation and strengthen collaborative innovation, and give full play to Professor Krausz’s role as a world-leading scientist in laser research. The University is committed to building the studio into a high-level platform through three key efforts:First, focus on joint research to achieve breakthroughs in more key technologies.Second, promote the sharing of achievements to foster new quality productive forces and support the high-quality development of Jinan’s laser industry.Third, strengthen joint talent cultivation to nurture more high-caliber professionals. The goal is to build the studio into a model for international scientific and technological cooperation, an engine for tackling core technical problems, and a magnet for top innovative talents.

Professor Krausz expressed his delight at returning to Shandong. He spoke highly of Shandong’s prominent geographical advantages, solid industrial foundation and sound innovation ecosystem, as well as its complete industrial chain and dynamic development in the laser field. He looked forward to conducting deeper and more practical cooperation with Qilu University of Technology (Shandong Academy of Sciences), jointly advancing cutting-edge basic research on attosecond lasers, and accelerating the industrial application of innovative achievements in life sciences, marine exploration, precision manufacturing and other fields.

The establishment of the International Top Scientist Studio is an important measure for Shandong to fully implement the strategies of invigorating the country through science and education, strengthening the country with talents, and driving development through innovation. It aims to plan and advance scientific and technological innovation with a global vision and actively integrate into the international innovation network. The official joining of Professor Krausz and his team marks a milestone for Shandong in attracting world-class intellectual resources and developing cutting-edge research in attosecond lasers. It will surely further promote high-level opening-up and cooperation in Shandong Province and enhance the overall performance of the regional innovation system.
